A Geeky Girl @ WEB2.0… | |||
I have updated the site and the theme a bit as you may have noticed! I have also turned on the Wordpress (my blog engine) caching which means that pages will load much faster. It hasn’t been possible to keep the caching on, as I have been doing development on the site on and off.
On my way home from work yesterday I listened to an old TWIT (This Week in Tech) podcast about Web2.0. It suddenly occurred to me that my blog has to be “socialized.” Only about fifty people per day have found their way to this blog, and most of them seem to be too shy to post comments. Most of the people who have come so far have been really lovely though.
But I was curious to see whether ’socialisation’ actually works. I have now signed up with a few of the social networking sites such as Digg, Reddit, Del.icio.us and Squidoo. (I had to add a “lens” there. I chose my “popular” topic of ‘femininity,’ something I really care about, as it happens. Follow the Squidoo link to have a look.)
Well, I am looking forward to seeing what will come of all this! If you don’t know about social networking sites, you really should check out the ones above. I had a really nice time investigating.
High time I wrote an actual post now though. Sorry it’s been a while..
By the way, I am thinking of changing the first letter of each post on this blog to a really fancy 19th century capital letter. I believe it’s called “dropcaps! What do you think of that idea?

Oh Geez, Another TWIT, I’d never suspected you were a “GEEK” I mean doesn’t every Female your age work in IT and blogs on the side? As for changing the First letter to the old English style “Go for it” you can always do a rollback if needed.
YAY! Your pages load so fast now. I thought it was something to do with my machine as it’s been slowing down.
I’m watching my stats and I’m not sure much traffic is coming through via the blog search engines, but I’m not techie, so maybe I’m reading the results wrong. I’ll check out the ones you mention and see what happens.
I just changed my site quite a bit too, so Blogging has been fun.
Keep up the great work!
You can actually do quite a bit typography with CSS and for dropcaps you can use :first-letter, which despite being a pseudo class actually works in most browsers (including IE6!). Although, I’m willing to bet money that using it to replace a character with an image is going to cock up in at least one browser so I think you may need to edit your raw html to get complete cross browser support.
Some of your headers get cut off if they’re more than 1 line long, I believe it is because you have “overflow: hidden” on h2 and h3.
If you want some nice site stats, then try Google Analytics. Just dump some invisible javascript into your page and you will get some pretty useful stuff, better than traditional log analysers like AWStats or Webalizer give you.
Here’s a useful typography link: http://typetester.maratz.com/
I’ve been checking more blog stats and registration with these sites is bringing in more traffic…

*And I am ((so)) touched that you added my site to yours - tack så mycket!
Thanks! I am going to submit to all of them! I already did the Swedish one.. But for the others, they review the site, sO I need to fix some bugs first. Sigh! Why did I make my own theme! I am really sick of it now!
Wow– terrific job on the site design. I’m very impressed.
Thanks for the link to my site. I appreciate it. So, now that you have gotten a taste for theme designs are you going to make more?
Hi! I love your site!
Thanks for the comment about this design… I am so glad you like it!
I was really beginning to have second thoughts about it. It took absolutely ages to get it to look right in all browsers.
I’ve enjoyed the design work though, and I’d really like to do web design for a living.
Right now I have a pretty demanding job, so I am short of time.
I’d like to set up some other blogs though, and split topics between blogs. For that, I may do some design. The only problem is time…
We’ll see!
